With the holidays literally around the corner, I thought it might be a great time to remind my friends and clients of the wonderful miracle of homeopathy.
Holiday time can be a stressful time for many people. It can also be a difficult time if you are still recovering from the loss of a loved one, divorce or a recent move that prevents you from being with family and friends.
The most important thing to remember is that we all have control over our own actions. We don’t have control over others actions. This may sound cliché, and for many this can be an annoying reminder of the fact we can’t change the behaviors of the people we would most definitely love to change!
So, let’s all take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the things we do have control over. For everything else, here are a few suggestions.
Rescue Remedy-A wonderful, gentle Bach Flower tincture that helps with mild anxiety and depression, or in anticipatory stress brought on by a big event, job interview, performance or the like. This can be taken several times throughout the day, or even several times within an hour. There are varying degrees of sensitivity to this, so you may need to play around with it a bit. Some notice no change while following the directions on the bottle, while others notice a profound change, and may even become quite sleepy. I suggest you start with the directions found on the label and increase the dose gradually as needed.
Yarrow Environmental Solution (YES Drops) Like Rescue Remedy, this is a gentle tincture to help with mild anxiety, however, the difference is found in the underlying cause. YES drops are perfect for the person who is quite sensitive to everyone around them, they seem to take on other people’s negativity and have difficulty with boundaries. They are profoundly affected by what ails others, or the environment in which they are in. Again, best to follow the directions on the label, or speak to your Homeopathic Practitioner or Holistic Health Practitioner.
Ignatia-This homeopathic remedy is one of the signature remedies for grief and loss. This can be an old loss, dating back many years or recent as of the day. The marked keynote symptom here is endless weeping or sighing and can escalate to hysterical sobbing. There also, can be the sensations as if a lump in the throat. The thing to remember when using this remedy is the overwhelming sense of grief that is openly expressed. There are other remedies for folks that have suppressed grief, finding it difficult to share their emotions and stuff old wounds and losses. Please ask me or your practitioner about these other remedies if this seems more like what you are experiencing.
Nux Vomica-A must have for the holidays!!! A great remedy for acute over indulging!! Too much food, drink or even work. Indigestion brought on by excessive drinking or eating heavy meals. There can be pain, or nausea and sensitivity to pressure on the abdomen, like a belt that is too tight. There can be marked irritability with sensitivity to noise, light and company.
Carbo Vegetabilis-Similar to Nux vomica, but more of a collapsed-worn out state. There can be shortness of breath, desire for fresh air or a desire to be fanned, much bloating and distention above the navel; flatulence, eructation’s and aerophagia (air swallowing) brought on by the difficulty in digesting fats. There may be a sensation of a warm head with a cool body.
Aresenicum Album-Now this is getting fun-the great food poisoning remedy. Foul smelling diarrhea with burning pains, relieved by warmth. Marked nervousness, restlessness and sometimes panic, often times waking with symptoms at 1am. (Goes to bed fine, but wakes then) The marked sypmtomogly here is the burning pains. There are times one can have painless diarrhea, this is not for that.
Veratrum album-Another fun one! This is for the combination of vomiting and diarrhea. Characteristic signs and symptoms are or can be; generalized icy coldness of the skin, cold sweating accompanied by copious amounts of diarrhea and projectile vomiting.
Ipecacuanha-we have all heard of giving ipecac when the desired response is to make a person vomit after ingesting a poisonous substance, however, when we use ipecac homeopathically, it is for the opposite of that. Homeopathic ipecac is for extreme nausea and vomiting where there is no relief after vomiting. We have all experienced a flu bug when eventually vomiting brings about relief, even if only temporarily. However, the marked expression of this remedy is constant, continued nausea with no relief. Another sign to look for in addition to this type of nausea is a clean tongue. Many times in these situations the patient may have a white, coated tongue.
These are just a few suggestions of many available homeopathic remedies. It is best to start with a 30c potency which can be purchased at your local health food store, or found on line at Hahnemann Labs, or by calling 888-427-6422.
These suggestions are for acute use, and as always, if symptoms persist for more than 48hours it is best to consult your MD or find your way to urgent care.
I wish all of you a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! Remember to count your blessings, not your losses, take a deep breath and ENJOY!!!
